Slow Down

Dear Self,

Slow down.  This isn't a school assignment.  You don't get credit for finishing early.   And, try as you might, you won't write a novel in a day. Spend time getting to know the characters.  Day dream.  Rethink the plot.  Revisit the setting until you can taste the salt in the sea.  Learn to show rather than tell.  Re-write the dialogue so that the characters own their own voice.  For all the talk of writing being a marathon, that's not it at all.  It's much more like making love.  Take your time, be a little less selfish and you'll find that the climax will be as powerful as the journey itself.

Sincerely,
John

  1. If I'd been thinking about writing in terms of sex, I'd probably be doing it a lot more. Creative motivation noted.

  2. I might have gone a little too far with this post. Might not be what you guys are looking for. It's easier to make these connections when I'm sleeping with the woman I'm co-writing a book with. Writing with Christy has been a blast.

  3. I don't think you did at all (or you just don't know us). Sex isn't a taboo topic because, um well, it's great. And none of us feel weird about that. You're absolutely write, that why you need to come over! We talk exactly about why writing or any art really, is like sex.
